On Saturday, August 15, 2009 a very special and fun event was held to benefit the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation and others affected by cancer.
This was the 5th Annual Linda Dworak Memorial Golf Outing.
Linda passed away from breast cancer in December 2004. She was a very upbeat person and was eager to find a cure before she passed away. She was very involved with the Relay for Life, and she was good at raising money. In her last year involved with the Relay, she raised $14,000 on her own.
Linda’s friends, Bob and Pat Nelson (herself a breast cancer survivor and patient of IBCRF's Dr. Love) and their son, Trent, of Manitowoc, WI decided to honor Linda’s memory by carrying on her fund-raising efforts. In 2004, Trent and Bob thought of hosting a golf outing. After that first outing, they held a cook-out for a small group.
Every year since then, their golf outing has grown. All of the money that they raise from the golf outing goes to the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation and two families.
One of the families they choose goes on a weekend getaway to The Beacons in Minocqua. This has been a great success. They always choose afamily that is going through cancer. It is their way of giving back and give the family a weekend of relaxation.
Adding a second family was new in 2009. The recipient is a former participant in the outing. He was recently married, bought a house and weeks later found out he has a rare form of cancer. Not what they had envisioned in their early marriage, but something they have accepted. The Nelsons are donating half of the funds raised to the family to help pay for medical bills.
The golf outing was held at the beautiful Wander Springs Golf Course in Greenleaf, WI and is a 4-person scramble.
